The brief
I was tired of build configs longer than the apps they built. Kiln started as a weekend rule: if it doesn’t fit on one screen, it doesn’t ship.
The move
Sensible defaults for the edge, caching on by default, and one config file with five keys. The docs are a single page with a search box and a changelog people actually read.
What changed
Kiln passed 18,400 stars and 212 contributors. Cold builds dropped from seconds to 184 ms on the reference project, and two agencies now ship every client site with it.
